Innovation & Sustainability
Framework conditions for sustainable innovation
Our industries are taking responsibility for promoting sustainability for present and future generations – whether through innovative process optimisation, the application of circular economy principles or the conservation of energy and resources. This commitment is bearing fruit – for the future, the right framework conditions are needed.

Sustainability is a central concern of our chemical-pharmaceutical industry, as is shown by the sustainability strategy launched this spring. This is based on the Federal Council's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The commitment of scienceindustries members is highlighted in the recently launched film about the efforts of our industries with regard to climate and resources.
Science: the basis for political decisions
To enable scienceindustries members to advance their commitment and be successful in all three dimensions of sustainability, the right course must be set. The relevant regulatory framework includes, in particular, society's openness to technology, for example to enable biotechnological processes or carbon capture, utilisation and storage. Political decisions should be based on scientific findings.
The dismantling of regulatory hurdles and innovation-friendly framework conditions are crucial to achieving a circular economy. The chemical-pharmaceutical industry also relies on knowledge- and risk-based chemical regulation. Switzerland needs legislation that is compatible with the EU and internationally, while also allowing for independent implementation in the future that protects the environment and takes into account the needs of the economy.
Security of supply, education & research, digitalisation
In addition, a breeding ground for innovation is needed: this includes the secure and affordable supply of energy, medicines and food to industry and the population. The promotion of education, research and innovation is also crucial to ensure that the economy has access to qualified specialists and European research. Furthermore, industry is calling for accelerated digitisation, particularly in the healthcare sector, in order to achieve efficiency gains and improved healthcare services.
