Sustainable PFAS regulation must be science-based

03.09.2025

The debate surrounding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is intensifying in Switzerland. In Sep-tember, PFAS will be on the agenda of both chambers: the National Council in its extraordinary session on 9 September 2025, and the Council of States later in the autumn session. These debates will set the course for Switzerland’s future handling of PFAS. scienceindustries, the trade association of the chemical, pharmaceutical and life sciences industries, calls for differentiated, science-based regulation that addresses environmental and health risks while safeguarding innovation.

PFAS are not a homogeneous group of substances. While some are restricted in use or rightly banned due to their persistence and potential risks, others are indispensable for key technologies – from medical devices to renewable energies and fire protection. A blanket ban would ignore these differences and endanger progress in vital industries. Parliament sets the course for PFAS regulation In the upcoming autumn session, Parliament has the opportunity to anchor evidence-based regulation. scienceindustries supports initiatives that are science-based, practicable and reflect sector-specific realities. Symbolic demands that are neither feasible nor enforceable are rejected. Detailed positions on pending motions can be found in the current issue of our Standpunkte newsletter (PDF, in German).

Regulation of PFAS is necessary, but it must be well designed. scienceindustries calls for an evidence-based policy that addresses real risks without undermining essential applications. Only a balanced approach can ensure sustainability, security of supply and innovation capacity in the long term. Further information on PFAS is available on our website here.
